South Suburban College is always welcoming tutors and students for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring program. The Adult Literacy Program is an individualized all-volunteer program designed to tutor adult education students and local residents. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. We work closely with the local libraries to facilitate our program in many locations, making it accessible and convenient for all community members. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program.

How Do I Become a Volunteer Tutor?

Volunteer tutors are in constant need throughout South Suburban community college district 510, which includes 21 cities/villages in Chicago’s south suburbs. Before working with adult learners, tutors must complete adult literacy tutor training, a 12-hour course that culminates with literacy training certification. Tutors work with students in public locations, such as libraries, for approximately one to two hours each week. Tutor trainings occur throughout the year at SSC at various times to accommodate a variety of schedules. Additional professional development opportunities available.

Workplace Skills Enhancement Grant Program

South Suburban College has experience helping companies obtain these grants and assistance is provided in completing applications as well as planning and implementing a workplace skills training program.

Grant funding is available through the Adult Education Department to help cover costs of implementing Workplace Foundational Skills, English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL), and High School Equivalency programs.

The Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of the Secretary of State; using state funds designated for literacy, award Workplace Skills Enhancement grants to Illinois businesses that partner with adult educational providers. These grant funds are used to upgrade employees’ skills that are needed to efficiently and competently perform required job tasks.

The training provided includes workplace math, reading, writing, and oral communication which can also be part of a High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) preparatory program. English as a Second Language (ESL) is also offered as part of English language skills. Classes are conveniently held on-site for employees at their company location.

For additional information in developing a Workplace Skills Enhancement program at your business, contact David Stephens, Adult Literacy Grants Manager, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558.
